For about six weeks, the sun never rises over the Norwegian island of Tromsoya

The waiter briefly casts a shadow across my table as he places a cup of steaming coffee in front of me. I am enjoying the sun, and he apologises with a smile: “Beklager det”.

The March sky is blue and cloudless. The air is filled with salt, squawking sea birds and the tinkle of metal clinking as sailboats shuffle in the water nearby. I tap the card reader: “No problem, tusen takk.” And resume my position in the sun.
