In conversation with Entertainment Weekly, the actor opened up about his hit series and how Season 4 wrapped out with Merle Callahan’s death. The character was played by none other than ‘Ray Donovan’ actor Richard Brake. Renner talked about how his character had a lot of reasons to end Callahan’s life, but when it came down to it, he had to let his brother do it. In the Season 4 finale, ‘Belly of the Beast,’ Kyle McLusky (played by actor Taylor Handley) ends Merle Callahan’s life by shooting him. Merle had killed Tracy, McLusky’s wife. Renner further explained by sharing that, “That’s one way to sort of… not really protect, but help forge a path for healing because of what [Merle] did. There was no other pathway.”

The ending of the show comes with Merle finding and killing Tracy, and then later surrendering himself at the nearby police station. There, Captain Walter (played by Rob Kirkland) lets him go. He also gives Det. Ian Ferguson (played by Hugh Dillon) to do with him whatever he sees fit. Ian drives him out to the middle of nowhere to meet the McLusky brothers, where the showdown happens, and Merle is killed. Renner further talked about the harrowing scene and mentioned the brotherly bond that the two share. “The beautiful end of it all is at least they [Mike and Kyle] have each other. That was something I really had to fight for [at] the end of this show. It was very, very, very important to at least give the audience that. Give them something good,” the actor further revealed.

Running for 4 seasons, the latest one was 10 episodes long, and started airing earlier this year on October 26, and premiered its season finale episode, ‘Belly of the Beast’, on December 28.
