A much loved retail store known to generations of Waterford shoppers announced its closure over Christmas, but has left open the possibility that it may re-open in 2026.

Michael Guineys Waterford, located at 9 Great Georges Street in the city, is a favourite for shoppers all year round but especially at Christmas time.

The store, which sells a vast variety of homeware, gifts, toys, kitchen ware, clothes and much more, announced its sudden closure on Monday, December 22.

“Guineys Waterford will be closed until further notice,” stated a spokesperson. “We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our customers a happy and safe Christmas. Thank you all for your continued support. We will see you all in the new year.”

The store has been sent many messages of support from the public. It’s understood the shop may recently have sustained fire damage.

Since 1971, Michael Guineys has grown alongside Ireland, added a spokesperson.

“From one street in Dublin to communities all across the country, we’ve been proud to serve generations of customers who have become part of our extended family.”

2025 was a milestone year for Guineys as they opened their 13th store.

“Opening our 13th store in Wexford was a milestone we never take for granted. It’s proof that even after more than five decades, our story is still being written — with the same values we started with.

“We wish you all a very happy Christmas and a New Year filled with health, happiness, and hope. From our family to yours, we are truly grateful — and we look forward to welcoming you again in 2026.”
