Declan Pierce was sitt­ing on a plastic lilo, soaking up the sun on the first day of his holiday in Spain when his phone rang. He was keeping a watchful eye on his eight-year-old daughter playing by the pool when his doctor called — to tell him he had cancer.

For the second time in less than two years, his world stopped.
