Warning: Some SPOILERS lie ahead for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2!While it seems all but guaranteed to be announced soon, director Emma Tammi cautions about expecting Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 just yet. The film adaptations of Scott Cawthon’s viral horror video game franchise have been some of the biggest genre hits on the big screen over the past two years, with the first film becoming Blumhouse’s highest-grossing movie of all-time, while the 2025 sequel entered the studio’s top 10 of all-time.

The Five Nights at Freddy’s movies have centered on Josh Hutcherson as Mike Schmidt, a troubled young man who, while still grappling with the disappearance of his younger brother as a child, learns of a group of restaurant animatronics possessed by the spirits of murdered children. Alongside him facing the animatronics are his younger sister, Piper Rubio’s Abby, and Elizabeth Lail’s Vanessa, who was revealed in the first film to be the daughter of serial killer William Afton, who also founded the titular pizzeria.

In honor of the sequel’s digital release, ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan interviewed Emma Tammi to discuss Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. When asked about the movie’s cliffhanger endings and how progress is coming on the potential Five Nights at Freddy’s 3, the director said she and the creative are “still processing” the release and reception of the 2025 sequel, but assured discussions are still underway for the threequel:

With the second now about to come out onto home video, which is super exciting, especially for the holidays, we’re in talks, and I’m sure we’ll know more in the new year, but it’s still all a conversation at this point.

Even before the 2025 sequel released, chances of a Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 were high thanks to Matthew Lillard confirming his contract extended to three films. While Blumhouse has generally been more cautious about confirming any such plans, even having held off announcing the new film until nearly six months after the 2023 original, they still always expressed their excitement to keep building out the brand after the first movie’s success.

With this in mind, it’s understandable why Tammi would be cautious about offering any firm update on Five Nights at Freddy’s 3’s development. Not only are Blumhouse and Universal trying to determine the best path for the threequel from a financial standpoint, after the 2025 sequel proved twice as expensive and, while still successful, came up nearly $80 million short at the box office compared to the first film.

The studios and the creative team, which includes franchise creator Scott Cawthon, who co-wrote the first installment and wrote the new film, are also likely trying to process Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’s dismal critical reception. The filmmaker has remained dedicated to delivering what fans of the game love, which has evidently worked well with both films scoring in the mid-80s with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and being box office hits.

All 17 Animatronics In Five Nights At Freddy’s 2

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 includes even more animatronics than the first movie, with multiple versions of Freddy, Chica, Bonnie, and Foxy appearing.

Even beyond the general reception, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’s ending left the door wide open for numerous storylines to be explored. For starters, Vanessa has become possessed by the spirit of The Marionette, with an audio message left by Skeet Ulrich’s Henry to Mike indicating he may have fallen victim to her off-screen. Additionally, the message confirmed that Henry was Afton’s partner in the restaurant and created the animatronics that would later house the spirits of Afton’s victims.

On top of everything, the post-credits scene for the 2025 sequel properly established the impending return of Lillard’s villain in his Springtrap suit for Five Nights at Freddy’s 3. With the latest installment ranking in the top 5 of numerous digital platforms in the week since its VOD debut, Tammi’s feeling that the new year will bring proper updates is likely to prove true very soon.
