  • In a spinoff from New Zealand Today, which brought us legends like Karen who wants her 20 bucks, comedian Guy Williams is back with New Zealand Tomorrow. What starts off as a hilarious look at small-town New Zealand, its colourful characters and a surprising lack of awareness that the Queen is, in fact, dead, ends in one of the most accidentally thought-provoking shows I’ve watched this year. Williams explores what we do when newsrooms, like his previous employers’ news site, NewsHub, shut down and there is no one left to do “real journalism”. As he uncovers a very real water crisis in Waimati, we meet a no-nonsense legend named Bev who probably thinks you’re a b**** and Motorbike Jesus who is on the “highway to hallelujah”. But then things rightfully take a serious turn as we dive into the environmental impacts of intensive farming, nitrate levels in Canterbury water and what isn’t being done about it, and why. In the words of ecologist Mike Joy, we have to “bang the drum”, otherwise New Zealand is f*****, so go watch and bang the drum, Aotearoa. – JM
