Marty Supreme (2025) UK Trailer | Timothée Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow
After Call Me by Your Name and A Complete Unknown, Timothée Chalamet will be hoping his Oscars ship finally comes in with this adrenalised sports drama from Josh Safdie.
He plays Marty Mauser, a Manhattan shoe-store clerk but not for long. His dream is to make it to the top tier of international ping-pong, and nothing, not a woman pregnant with his child (Odessa A’zion), not a Japanese arch-rival (Koto Kawaguchi), will stop him.
The only thing stopping Marty is his impulsiveness and grandiose opinion of himself, which lands him in hot water with the sport’s overseeing body. So ensues a madcap dash through nocturnal 1950s New York, dodging cops, jealous husbands, and a local crime boss (Abel Ferrera) while finding time to sleaze a retired film star (Gwyneth Paltrow).
Safdie (working solo instead of as one half of the Safdie Brothers) floors the accelerator in a way that will be no surprise to anyone who’s seen Uncut Gems or Good Time. Tremendous fun with no let-up, in other words. As for Chalamet, he’ll be good value for his Oscar should it materialise. He is outstanding as the never-say-die anti-hero you’ll want to both cheer on and strangle, often in the space of a single scene.
