New Year’s Eve revellers in Birmingham had a devastating end to their year — and start to 2026 — after an advertised fireworks display didn’t happen.

Online social media posts advertised ‘the biggest NYE party’ would be taking place at Centenary Square, with many heading out to the location for what was to be an exciting night.

Social media footage sees a packed crowd of spectators waiting in anticipation for a show that never went ahead.

It wasn’t long before local police took to the area to get the crowd to disperse and break the news that there was no event taking place.

Police are reported to have issued a warning during the week to urge attendees that the party was a hoax and would not be going ahead.

A statement from Birmingham Police warned that there were no official fireworks displays or city-organised events happening.

They said: ‘Every year, rumours start to spread online about big celebrations in the city. Unfortunately, these false claims often lead to confusion and disappointment.

‘Last year, for example, we were made aware of posts that circulated about a spectacular show in Centenary Square. Many people believed it, travelled into the city centre, and were left frustrated when nothing happened.’
