Sarah Shahi and her former Sex/Life costar Adam Demos have called it quits after five years of dating.
The 45-year-old actress confirmed the news in an interview with Us Weekly published Friday, in which she reflected on life’s “messiness” ahead of the release of her book Life Is Lifey: The A to Z’s on Navigating Life’s Messy Middle.
“There was an element of the relationship that people really felt belonged to them, which was very sweet and heart-warming,” Shai said, reflecting on her relationship with Demos while filming their risqué Netflix drama. “The flip to that is when things end, you feel like you’re going through it twice.”

The former couple met in 2021, on the set of the series inspired by B.B. Easton’s book 44 Chapters About 4 Men. During the show’s two-season run, Shahi played horny housewife Billie, who’s struggling to remain a devoted spouse to her husband (Mike Vogel) while craving the freer, wilder days of her youth. And vivid memories of her former lover Brad (Demos) continue to keep her up at night.
Before the streamer canceled the series in 2023, Shahi spoke out about her struggles filming season 2 during an appearance on the podcast Not Skinny But Not Fat. The actress not only voiced concerns that she wasn’t being supported by those involved in the show, but also criticized how she and her real-life significant other, Demos, barely had any scenes together in the second installment. “He’s like, in 60 seconds of the entire thing,” she said. “I never saw him.”
Shahi and Demos’ relationship continued post-cancellation, but the star reiterated that having a relationship in the public eye made things even harder when it came to splitting. “You’re going through it emotionally on a personal level, and then you’re going through it again on a much bigger level,” she explained to Us Weekly.
But Shahi is no stranger to handling a public split. The Paradise star ended her 11-year marriage to Steve Howey — with whom she shares son William, 16, and 10-year-old twins Violet and Knox — in 2020.
“There were so many things that I was scared of, but it got to a point [where] I couldn’t ignore the fact that I felt like I was suffocating, and the person that was suffocating me was me,” Shahi recalled of their marriage woes. “I needed to finally put my big-girl pants on and go, ‘I can do this, and it’s going to look messy, and it’s going to be hard, but at the end of the day, there is nothing I will enjoy more than peace.'”

But the actress declared that “it worked out for both parties,” and shared that she and Howey maintain a “beautiful relationship” as coparents. “There is no failure here. I was in a relationship for 18 years and have three beautiful kids. It is by every definition a success to me,” she added. “It’s important to show the kids, in my opinion, that when something is out of sync, you have to have the courage to let it go.”
