Gardaí have confirmed they responded to reports of ‘an incident’ in Letterkenny yesterday.
While not going into specific details, a spokesperson for the Garda Press Office said: “Gardaí responded to reports of an incident in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal, on Friday evening, 2nd of January. Enquiries are ongoing at this time”.
The reports stem from unverified allegations posted on social media that an attempted abduction of a ‘young woman’ took place in the Rahan area of the town yesterday evening. It was claimed that a local man had intervened and that he chased off the attackers.
However, Donegal Daily understands, no formal complaint has yet been made by any alleged victim.
Reports of attempted abductions are commonplace around Donegal and are all investigated by Gardaí. Traditionally, these have centered around children. But, in recent years, there has been an increasing trend in reports of foreign males attempting to abduct women. However they rarely result in arrests or prosecutions due to lack of evidence.
In a 2016 opinion piece in the Irish Times, journalist Peter McGuire wrote that ‘rumours and false alarms’ far outnumber real abduction attempts– and now social media further amplifies such stories.
