Key Points
- Evaluate the state of your sofa and whether or not it needs replacing.
- If it is in decent shape, keep it for now and replace the rug instead.
- Choose an area rug that is large enough for your living room.
If you’ve decided that your living room needs a makeover, but don’t know where to start, focus on the change that will make the biggest impact.
We asked interior designers to share the first thing that they would change in most living rooms to give the space a fresh start.

“The biggest offender I see in living rooms is a sectional or sofa that doesn’t fit the space,” says interior designer Peggy Haddad. “Or an old, worn-down sofa that’s dragging everything down.” A well-proportioned sofa instantly sets the tone for symmetry, flow, and mood, she says.
But if your existing sofa is already the right size and is in good enough shape to keep? She goes for the area rug.
“The rug dictates the palette, the style, and the visual boundaries of the room,” she shares. “A fresh rug that’s the right size—usually bigger than people think—gives the whole space a reset.”

Benefits of Starting With the Rug

In addition to being less expensive than a sofa or armchairs, area rugs add personality to your home, Darden notes.
Choose a rug style that complements your interior, such as modern, abstract, traditional, or boho designs.
“A rug can have a massive and immediate impact for a change in the living room,” she explains. “Not only does a rug anchor furniture, it adds texture, coziness, and warmth. This result instantly elevates the space.”

If you’re not in the market for new seating, swapping in a new area rug is the fastest, most transformative refresh, Haddad says. This is particularly true if your living room is currently rug-free or has a rug that is too small for the space.
For a budget-friendly option, she suggests choosing a machine-woven rug in a generous size of 8×10 or 9×12 for most rooms.
“It completely elevates a space without breaking the bank,” she says.
If you’re working with a larger budget, the designer suggests a hand-knotted rug.
“It’s an investment, but it adds richness, depth, and artistry you’ll enjoy for decades,” she notes.
The Last Thing They Would Change
Darden suggests holding off on replacing a sofa until you can afford a quality piece that will last for a long time. In the meantime, if you dislike the fabric on your current sofa, she advises purchasing an inexpensive slipcover to disguise dated fabric and upholstery and focusing on the rug.
“People often leave window treatments and lighting for last,” Haddad says. “I wish they wouldn’t—they’re hugely important.”
But the very last thing she would change is your coffee and side tables, especially if they’re older or mismatched.
“Mixing wood tones and finishes is very ‘in,’” she says, “and a collected look often feels more personal and elevated.”
Haddad also suggests holding off on changing artwork, considering it too personal to rush. Collect pieces over time to reflect your story.
