A leading HR consultant has suggested the working from home conversation has “gone mad”, with many employees now requesting to work from home due to worsening traffic in the mornings.

Working from home legislation was introduced back in March 2024, which requires employers to acknowledge an employee’s request to work from home. Since this rule was introduced, only one of 60 complaints has been upheld, with 11 fully rejected.

Local Minister and Mayo Deputy Alan Dillon launched a public consultation late last year, to gather views on the legislations effectiveness, and see what changes would be suggested.

At the time, Minister Dillon said it would be an opportunity to hear whether or not the legislation is clear and accessible, or if it presents any challenges.

Now, Damien McCarthy of the HR Buddy says that it is “unfair to employers” that workers are requesting to work from home due to worsening traffic and road conditions, and that it’s up to the government, not business owners to fix the issue.
