A woman has been fined for speeding after telling the court she had been busy organising a Palestinian choir to perform in Ireland and the UK.

Sarah Franklyn (70), of Hawkins Wood Close, Greystones, appeared at Bray District Court after exceeding the 60 km/h speed limit on Rathdown Road, Greystones, on July 8, 2025.

Ms Franklyn testified that she had been helping a choir from Palestine to perform shows in Ireland and the UK. The court heard that she had been travelling frequently between the two countries and only received her fixed penalty notice on the final day for payment.

Ms Franklyn said she contacted gardaí, who advised her to appeal the fine, as it was too late to pay. The court was told that the penalty point amount for her offence would have been lower if it had been paid on time.

Sergeant Mick Canavan acknowledged that Ms Franklyn was involved in a “noble cause”, but reminded her that she had pleaded guilty to speeding. “Especially with the current climate and incidents on the roads,” he added.

Her solicitor, Joe Maguire, told the court that the accused’s daughter is in college in the UK and was not at home either.

Judge Ramsey fined Ms Franklyn €100, allowing her three months for payment.
