The family of a new dad who suffered a brain injury after losing blood during heart surgery is trying to raise money to get him airlifted home.

Ciara Bourke said her brother Brendan travelled to London to undergo heart surgery, but the operation took a devastating turn when he lost a substantial amount of blood. while under the knife. This led to a brain injury.

His sister Ciara, who set up a GoFundMe to raise money, said: “Since then, Brendan has remained in a cardiology hospital in London, fighting every day.

“Our family’s biggest wish now is to bring Brendan home to Dublin, where he can receive the specialised neurological care he urgently needs to recover, and where he can be close to the people who love and support him most.”

His sister has said insurance companies have so far refused to cover the costs of taking him home.

Ciara added: “The situation has been incredibly hard, both emotionally and financially, and ongoing medical care and transfer costs are placing a huge strain on our family.

“Brendan is a new dad to a beautiful little boy of 9 months, who he loves dearly. We want his little boy to get to know his loving and funny dad, like we do. More than anything, we want to give Brendan the chance to recover, to come home, and to be the dad his little boy deserves.”

The fundraiser, set up last week, has raised nearly €8,000 and has a goal of €45,000.

Ciara said the funds raised will go directly towards covering Brendan’s medical expenses and the cost of his medical transfer back to Ireland – with any remaining donated to the Beaumont Hospital Foundation, to help other families facing similar battles.
