The Northern lights that lit up the night skies in Waterford last night was the strongest concentration of the phenomenon seen in years.

That’s according to a former physicist with the European Space agency.

Dr. Brian O Halloran said Ireland was in the perfect location to see the Northern lights last night.

He said that the lights seen in Waterford were some of the strongest seen in years, as a result of an eruption in the sun.

“I’ve seen aurora numerous times over the last 30 years and last night was the strongest display visually that we’ve seen since at least 2003.”

He went on to say that rural Waterford would have had the best view possible to the northern lights.

“We had the perfect view here in Waterford last night, we were incredibly lucky in areas like Boatstrand and other rural areas, with the strongest concentration at around 9pm”

He continued by saying that the people of Waterford may witness more Northern lights tonight but the wont be nearly as strong or visible.

We might see something tonight but it is unlikely that we will see any spectacular, most of the display’s strength was last night.”
