The Defence Forces’ bomb disposal team was deployed to Trump International Golf Links and Hotel in Doonbeg last night.

A suspicious package containing a substance was discovered at the resort yesterday afternoon.

Gardaí and units of the Kilkee and Kilrush Fire Service also attended, while Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts from the Irish Defence Forces were also dispatched.

The package was subsequently deemed safe and the cordon was lifted.

The hotel had been under a heavy security presence this week for the visit of Eric Trump, son of US President Donald Trump, who departed from Shannon Airport earlier that day.

Gardai say investigations are ongoing.
