Selena Gomez‘s wedding to Benny Blanco was almost ruined by her Only Murders In The Building co-star Martin Short after he made a terrible mistake.

The 75-year-old actor appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday as he recalled a shocking moment at 33-year-old Gomez’s wedding back in September as her ex Justin Bieber recently sparked social media frenzy over her.

Short explained: ‘The wedding was perfect. It was beautiful, Everything was perfect, except, the night of the reception… it was a big, big party, imagine a stage, dance floor, musicians. 

‘At the back of the tent were these individual seating areas with couches and chairs. So if you had a group — we had a group [of] Only Murders in the Building [cast and crew], there was about 12 of us. All of us together.’

He then went on to make the shocking revelation that he had accidentally cut into Gomez and Blanco’s, 37, wedding cake.

Short continued: ‘And there was a wedding cake by our section but it was a small wedding cake. I just assumed there was a wedding cake for each section in the back.’

He goes onto explain that a few hours passed by at the party and their fellow co-star Steve Martin, 80, was about to leave. 

Short said: ‘Maybe I’d had a cocktail, I don’t know. So I said, “Oh Steve you can’t leave” — I had a fork in my hand. 

‘”You can’t leave yet without a piece of wedding cake.” And I cut the wedding cake, one side, cut it the other and then all the people in our group scream, “Marty!”‘

He found out then that it was the actual wedding cake as a photo was shown of the ‘just married’ heart-shaped cake was shown on the screen leading the audience to gasp.

Short said: ‘I tried to fix it with a fork. This was bad. This was about an hour before it was to be presented. And so I turned to Paul Rudd and said, “So, do we just leave?”‘

The stars went on to talk to the wedding coordinator who brought the chef out.

Short explained: ‘Then they did surgery but it ended up being like a Hollywood wedding cake and that it was beautiful but now it had a little work done.’

They then proceeded to show a photo of Gomez and Blanco kissing behind the cake after it had been fixed.

Short joked: ‘Steve [Martin] was so stunned when I did that he gained color’

They  proceeded to show a photo of Gomez and Blanco kissing behind the cake after it had been fixed

He went on to say that he and Martin attempted to keep the incident from pal and co-star Gomez but word did get around to her.

Short explained: ‘I kept saying, “No, guys, we can’t let Selena know.” And Steve said, “Yeah, maybe we tell her in a month or something.”

‘And then as I was leaving, Selena came by [and said], “Hey Marty, I heard you tried to eat my cake.”‘

Back in September, Gomez  posted a suite of romantic photos with music producer Blanco as she offered a glimpse into their wedding extravaganza before the couple married at a ceremony in front of celebrity pals including BFF Taylor Swift. 

Gomez wed her fiancé of nine months Blanco at a 70-acre private estate, just north of Santa Barbara, in California on September 27, 2025.

Gomez and Blanco had a relatively short engagement and announced they would wed early in December 2024 in an Instagram post she captioned: ‘Forever begins now.’

Gomez’s marriage to Virginia native Blanco marks a new chapter in what was once a turbulent love life that included a high-profile relationship with Canadian singer Justin Bieber.

Back in September, Gomez posted a suite of romantic photos with music producer Blanco as she offered a glimpse into their wedding extravaganza before the couple married at a ceremony in front of celebrity pals 

Gomez also posed while sitting alone on the grass as she held her bridal bouquet up to her face, smiling as she breathed in the scent

Gomez’s BFF Taylor Swift was in attendance at the nuptials

That ill-starred romance started in 2011 when she was 18 and he 16 and flamed out for good in 2018 – just months before the boyish megastar wed Hailey Baldwin.

In a 2020 interview with NPR, Gomez described the relationship as ‘toxic’ adding: ‘I’m not being disrespectful.

‘I do feel I was a victim to certain [emotional] abuse.’

Although Gomez met Blanco while she was in her teens, neither remembered the meeting and the pair only became friends after collaborating on the March 2019 tune I Can’t Get Enough.

The video featured Blanco dressed as a white teddy bear but romance didn’t blossom until they collaborated again years later on Single Soon, her August 2023 smash hit.

By December the same year, the couple confirmed they were an item, with Gomez declaring online of Blanco: ‘[He is the] best thing that’s ever happened to me. The end.’
