Whether it’s tucking into a well-earned treat at the weekend or ordering a meal on those weeknights where you just don’t feel like cooking, delivery drivers play a key role in keeping the people of Leeside fed and happy. These people rely on their vehicles to do their job, and one takeaway spot has now circulated an appeal for info after their driver’s car was stolen mid-shift.
The car was stolen from outside Domino’s Pizza, Glanmire, shortly after midnight on Wednesday. The delivery driver was wrapping up for the night inside the shop when the theives smashed the window and began to tamper with the ignition.
The worker came out and tried to stop them, but was met with threats of serious violence. The thieves then hotwired the car and drove off.
A photo of the car, a white Toyota Aqua with the registration number 162-D-34948, was shared on social media yesterday, with the owner urging anyone who may have seen the car to get in contact.
The post reads: “Our driver’s car was stolen last night (around 00:15) from outside Domino’s Pizza, Glanmire. The window was broken. If anyone has seen this car or has any information, please message us directly or email feedback@maanofoods.ie. We would really appreciate any help or shares. Thank you”
The car is a Japanese import, which typically doesn’t come with immobilisers fitted as standard. This often makes these vehicles a target for thieves across Leeside.
Dealing with theives has become a fact of life for delivery drivers across Cork, many of whom use bikes to deliver food to households across the city centre. During these quick stops at shops and restaurants where bikes are left unattended for no more than a few minutes, riders sometimes return to find their bike gone or would-be thieves tampering with the lock.
While a quick shout is often enough to send these people packing, there have been cases in the past where delivery drivers have been attacked during attempted robberies, leaving many feeling unsafe as they go about their daily work.
CorkBeo previously spoke with one delivery driver who warned that ‘Cork is going the way of Dublin’ because as many as three bikes a day are stolen across Leeside. This information is distributed through WhatsApp groups set up by the drivers, who warn each other about ‘no-go’ zones and keep an eye out for any bikes that were reported stolen.
The cost of even unsuccessful thefts can be difficult to bear, as locks will sometimes need to be replaced, or the bike itself could have been damaged by the thieves. Delivery riders are usually responsible for buying their own kit, and according to Glassdoor, they typically earn an average of €17,500 per year, so replacing even small bits of gear can be a burdensome cost.
