Penneys have announced plans to open a brand new store in a major boost for Irish shoppers.

The Irish retailer is set to open its first ever branch in Co Cavan for what will be their 39th store in the Republic of Ireland.

The new Penneys store will be located in the heart of Cavan town on Main Street, and will occupy the existing Tesco site, which will move to a new location at Townparks.

Works have yet to start on the new location, but the retailer is aiming to open the new Penneys store in Spring 2028.

The new store represents a significant investment in the region by Penneys and is set to bring new jobs to the area, which will bring a welcome boost to the local economy.

Commenting on the announcement, Fintan Costello, Head of Penneys in Ireland and Northern Ireland, said: “We are thrilled to finally confirm that Penneys is coming to Cavan.

“We know local customers have been asking us for a store here for many years, so it’s incredibly exciting to finally make it happen.

“It’s going to take some time but bear with us, we’re really looking forward to bringing our amazing range of great value clothing and accessories to our Cavan customers and supporting the local economy.

“We’ll be sharing more details in the months ahead, and we can’t wait to open our doors to the people of Cavan.”

The new Penneys store in Carlow town will offer the same in-store experience that the retailer is known for and customers can look forward to shopping the latest trends in fashion, as well as everyday essentials in beauty, lifestyle, and homeware.

Penneys opened its first store on Mary Street in Dublin city centre in 1969 and with the addition of Cavan will soon have 39 stores across 23 counties in the Republic of Ireland.

Operating as Primark internationally, the retailer has over 440 stores across Europe and the US.

The new store in Cavan is part of Primark’s commitment to invest over €250 million in Ireland over a ten-year period, which includes the development, relocation and/or refurbishment of its stores across the country, including Penneys’ stores in Portlaoise, Dooradoyle Limerick and Ennis later this year.

Primark is also accelerating the pace of its international expansion, with ambitions to reach 530 stores by the end of 2026. Last summer, Primark entered its 17th market, opening its first store in Budapest, Hungary.
