Farm organisations have called for a “whole‑of‑sector response” and maximum vigilance after the first case of bluetongue was confirmed in a Co Wexford herd, prompting immediate action across the livestock industry.

The Department of Agriculture is continuing detailed investigations today after a bovine tested positive for bluetongue virus serotype 3 (BTV3) during routine surveillance, the first time the disease has been detected in the Republic.
