“Nearly everything about this chaotic contest ran against expectation,” Seán Moran writes of Division 1’s meeting of western rivals Galway and Mayo.

“There was the weather, a breathless day in Salthill, sunny as late spring with 11,515 in attendance. The ambient mood in Pearse Stadium before throw-in was that the visitors should win well. In the end Andy Moran was happy just to make it back down the road with the points – despite having led by 11 going into the final quarter.”

Here’s highlights of Armagh’s big win over Monaghan in Clones.

The re-reformed hooter rule might already have been one of the stories of the weekend, after Brian McLoughlin’s last-second equaliser against Tyrone and Jack Carney’s incredible buzzer-beating two-pointer that put six between Mayo and Galway at half-time. But the finish to Kerry-Roscommon made sure that it would be a big talking-point, as Tomás Kennedy seemed to defy time itself to make an incredible catch and fist over the winner.

And here’s that beautiful score from Cork’s William Buckley, the highlight of the second half.

Here’s the highlights of Cork’s dominant win over Waterford.

Here’s a round-up of the NFL Division Three action, as Down, Westmeath and Wexford got off to winning starts.

Here is the report on the other Division 1A action, as Kilkenny defeated Offaly by four points.

[Kilkenny finish off Offaly after slow start]

Full-time: Cork 3-25 Waterford 1-17

A great start for Ben O’Connor in the national league, as Cork put on an exhibition in Páirc Uí Caoimh. Waterford’s Reuben Halloran was fantastic, but a lot to work on for the Déise.

71 Mins: Red card for Waterford. Things boil over a little, and Seán Walsh is sent off for pulling a Cork player’s helmet off. Cork 3-25 Waterford 1-17

69 Mins: A wonderful score from Mark Coleman puts 14 between the teams again. Cork 3-25 Waterford 1-17

65 Mins: Reuben Halloran gets two-in-a-row again, one from a free, and then one from play after he bounced the sliotar up off the floor, and struck over from a tight angle. Cork 3-24 Waterford 1-17

62 Mins: With Cork now without Patrick Horgan, William Buckley recreates one of his most famous scores, batting the ball over from down on his knees. Lovely stuff.

Cork 3-24 Waterford 1-15

58 Mins: Reuben Halloran has been the real bright spot on a fairly crap day for Waterford. Another two points from frees. Cork 3-23 Waterford 1-15

56 Mins: Lovely pass from Diarmuid Healy to find Tommy O’Connell, and he strokes it over the bar from halfway. Cork 3-23 Waterford 1-13

54 Mins: Fourteen in front now, Cork have to be praised for not only putting up a great scoreline, but also playing some great hurling throughout. Cork 3-21 Waterford 1-13

50 Mins: Shane Bennett goes for a goal to put Waterford back in the game with a 21-yard free, but it’s saved. Halloran strikes over the 65. Hugh O’Connor gets a lovely score in response. Cork 3-20 Waterford 1-12

46 Mins: GOAL for Cork! William Buckley slaps the ball home with one hand on the hurl. Any hope of a competitive game after the Waterford goal is pretty much gone now. Cork 3-19 Waterford 1-11

43 Mins: Reuben Halloran gets his eighth point of the game from a free. Then he takes on Rob Downey, who pulls him to the floor, similarly to the Waterford black card earlier on, and the ref decides to make the same decision again. Penalty for Waterford, and Rob Downey off. Goal for Waterford! Shane Bennett bounces it off the floor and beats Collins low.

Cork 2-19 Waterford 1-11

41 Mins: Alan Walsh replaced Declan Dalton for Cork, while Calum Lyons enters for the Déise. Fitzgibbon taps a free over. Cork 2-19 Waterford 0-10

39 Mins: Cork hit two points in a row, before Waterford’s Sean Mackey passes up his side’s first goal chance, hitting a tame effort straight at Patrick Collins. Cork 2-18 Waterford 0-10

35 Mins: We’re back on for the second half of Cork vs Waterford. The Déise win a free straight away to pull a point back.

Cork 2-16 Waterford 0-10

Here are some first half highlights from Páirc Uí Caoimh.

Half-time: Cork 2-16 Waterford 0-9

So far, that feels like a training game for Cork. All of their forwards are running riot, and Waterford have been without a foothold throughout the half.

35 Mins: Another Halloran free keeps the scoreboard ticking for Waterford. Cork 2-16 Waterford 0-9

32 Mins: Two scores back-to-back for Reuben Halloran and Waterford. That streak is stamped out by Brian Roche. Cork 2-16 Waterford 0-8

27 Mins: A decision to be made for the referee now, as Brian Roche seemed to be fouled while bearing down on goal. Penalty given. Mark Fitzgerald is given a black card, too. Goal for Declan Dalton, who scores maybe the best penalty I’ve ever seen, despite a good attempt by Billy Nolan.

Cork 2-15 Waterford 0-6

24 Mins: It’s all going to plan so far for Ben O’Connor in his first league game as Cork manager. Diarmuid Healy with the latest for the Rebels. Cork 1-15 Waterford 0-5

22 Mins: Darragh Lyons gets a great score for the visitors.

Cork 1-14 Waterford 0-4

19 Mins: An unusual score from Cork, but a beauty. A poor pass inside left Dalton stranded in the corner, but he fired a diagonal back to Fitzgibbon, who strikes over from the 65. Then William Buckley gets in on the act, another cracker.

Cork 1-13 Waterford 0-3

17 Mins: GOAL for Cork! Alan Connolly only has to tap it home, after Declan Dalton slaps it across the goalmouth to the poacher.

Cork 1-11 Waterford 0-3

14 Mins: Good save from Patrick Collins, who’s been kept busy with dropping shots. Waterford point the 65 after.

Cork 0-10 Waterford 0-2

11 Mins: Nice bit of improvisation from Alan Connolly there, as he kicks the sliotar on the bounce. Dalton gathers it and fires over.

Cork 0-10 Waterford 0-1

8 Mins: Shane Barrett is already standing out, notching two more points there.

Cork 0-9 Waterford 0-1

7 Mins: Cork are taking off at a canter here, sharing the scoring around the forwards.

Cork 0-7 Waterford 0-1

Onto the hurling, Cork take on Waterford in Páirc Uí Caoimh.

3 Mins: Cork 0-3 Waterford 0-1

Roscommon with a huge chance to win the game, but Paul Carey blasts it wide from 14 yards! Kerry on the attack now in the final minute – but it drops short! Looks like a foul on the Rossies a couple of times there, but no joy from the referee. Sean O’Shea boots the free in with no time left on the clock, but the hooter doesn’t come in time, as Tomás Kennedy fists it over after a great bit of fielding. The Roscommon players protest, but that’s that, and Kerry eek out the win.

The new hooter rules mean that Galway can’t mount a good attack at goal, and Mayo win out in the all-Connacht affair. A great start for Andy Moran, and a great game of football.

68 Mins: What a game in Pearse Stadium! Rob Hennelly has been especially impressive, this time saving from point blank range twice in ten seconds. But Galway nail a two-pointer.

Daire Cregg’s free and a Jack Duggan point have the KErry lead down to a minimum.

A goal in Tullamore as well, as Louth hit the front through their star man, Sam Mulroy.
