DRUMMOND ISLAND, Mich,. (WPBN/WGTU) – – The International Ice Bridge connecting Drummond Island, Michigan, and St. Joseph Island, Ontario, has opened for the winter season across the frozen waters of Lake Huron, according to the Drummond Island Tourism Association.
The bridge is 12-miles and crossing is accessible to snowmobiles, fat-tire bicycles, dog sled teams, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers, highlighting the long-standing connection between the island communities on both sides of the border.
The tourism association says the ice bridge is open only when conditions allow and is regularly monitored.
Travelers are guided by evergreen trees marking the route, but caution is advised as conditions can change rapidly.
All travelers must comply with U.S. and Canadian border requirements, the tourism association said.
Those entering the U.S. must use the CBP ROAM app, which requires an account setup and a video chat with a CBP officer upon arrival.
Dining options are available on both sides of the border.
Hilton Beach on St. Joseph Island offers meals and drinks at Tiltn’ Hilton, while Drummond Island features The Northwood Bar & Restaurant and Chuck’s Place.
Travelers can check real-time conditions via a live webcam at visitdrummondisland.com.
The Drummond Island Tourism Association advises checking conditions before crossing, avoiding solo travel, and staying prepared for changing weather and ice conditions.
