After 14 successful years on South Frederick Street, Denise Donnelly – one of Dublin’s most respected gallerists – opens a new chapter with the relocation of The Doorway Gallery to Wicklow Street. Here, she reflects on how the Irish art landscape has evolved over the past two decades.

Over the past twenty years, Irish art buyers have become noticeably more informed and confident. Where purchasing was once driven largely by traditional tastes and investment considerations, today buyers are more open to contemporary practice, emerging artists, and concept-driven work.

There is also a much wider demographic collecting art today: younger buyers, first-time collectors, and international audiences influenced by online access, social media, and increased exposure to global art fairs and institutions.

Importantly, many buyers are now motivated by personal connection.

So what are the challenges and opportunities facing new artists today? The biggest challenge for emerging artists is visibility in an oversaturated, fast-moving market. The pressure to self-promote, maintain a digital presence, and produce work consistently can be overwhelming, often alongside financial insecurity.

However, there are also significant opportunities.

Artists today can reach international audiences much earlier in their careers, build direct relationships with collectors, and explore alternative exhibition models. Those who are adaptable, authentic, and willing to engage beyond the studio can carve out meaningful careers faster than was possible in the past.

Galleries play a vital curatorial and mentoring role in nurturing emerging talent. Beyond selling work, a good gallery provides structure, context, and advocacy – helping artists develop a coherent body of work, place it within a broader discussion, and present it professionally. Galleries also act as a bridge between artists and collectors, building trust on both sides.

For emerging artists in particular, galleries offer validation, long-term guidance, and the space—both physical and conceptual—to grow sustainably rather than chasing short-term trends.
