Shelly has expanded its Gen4 product line with the Shelly Dimmer Gen4, a compact in-wall dimming controller designed to bring smart dimming to standard lighting circuits while supporting the Matter standard as well as utilising, Zigbee, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. The module is intended for retrofit and new installations where flexible, precise control of dimmable lights is required.
The Dimmer Gen4 fits behind existing wall switches and can control a wide range of lighting loads without requiring a neutral conductor. A bypass accessory is recommended if the dimmer is used without a neutral and the connected load is under 20W. Supported lighting types include dimmable LED lamps up to 150W, incandescent bulbs up to 200W, halogen lamps up to 200W, and both iron-core and electronic transformers within similar power ranges.
Shelly’s latest generation module integrates multiple wireless protocols, offering maximum flexibility for different smart home setups. Native Matter certification enables direct inclusion in Matter ecosystems, allowing control from Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and other Matter-capable platforms. In addition to Matter, the device supports Wi-Fi for local and cloud access, Bluetooth for initial setup and short-range interactions, and Zigbee for tighter mesh-network integration. Of these options, only Matter (over WiFi) will allow for straightforward Apple Home integration.
Users can adjust brightness and create automated lighting scenes through the Shelly app or third-party home automation systems that integrate the module. The hardware includes advanced features such as adjustable fade duration and button fade rate for finer manual control, scripting and scheduling capabilities, and local automation triggers. When used with a neutral wire, it also reports voltage, current, and power consumption for energy monitoring.
Physically, the module is small enough to be installed behind standard switch plates and does not overtly change existing wiring layouts. It is intended for residential and light commercial use, from retrofit projects that upgrade existing lights to completely new smart home installations.
The addition of Matter support is particularly noteworthy, as it simplifies integration across major ecosystems including of course, Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa without relying on proprietary bridges or custom integrations.
