A sculpture of Daniel O’Connell has been unveiled at Leinster House to commemorate 250 years since his birth.

Mr O’Connell, known as the liberator, was born in August 1775.

He was the first Irish Catholic to speak in the British parliament and worked towards the abolition of slavery.

The statue, completed in 1932, was donated to the Houses of the Oireachtas by Bank of Ireland. The sculptor, Andrew O’Connor, has several statues across the capital, in Merrion Square and in Dún Laoghaire.

The sculpture sits on the Kildare Street side of Leinster House, outside the entrance to the extension to the main building, known as LH2000.
