Pedestrian (70s) dies after he was struck by car on Main Street in Abbeyleix, Co Laois Man (30s) dies in single vehicle car crash in Co Monaghan
In Co Laois, a pedestrian aged in his 70s was struck by a car, while a man in his 30s died following a single vehicle road crash in Co Monaghan.
The incident involving the pedestrian happened at approximately 7pm yesterday evening on Main Street in Abbeyleix, Co Laois.
Gardaí and emergency services arrived at the scene of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian on Wednesday evening.
The male pedestrian was transported to Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore, where he was later pronounced dead.
No other injuries have been reported, a Garda spokesperson said. The road was closed for technical examination and has since reopened.

Any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and were travelling in the area between 6.30pm and 7:30pm yesterday evening are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.

Meanwhile, a motorist in his 30s has died following a single vehicle road crash in Co Monaghan.
The man, who was the sole occupant of the car, died in the wake of the collision which occurred at Inishammon, Smithboro, Co. Monaghan at around 7:30pm.
Gardaí and emergency services raced to the scene, but were unable to save the man from his injuries.
His body has since been transferred to the Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan where a post-mortem examination is expected to take place later today.
A garda spokesperson confirmed the local coroner has been notified with the road itself remaining closed to allow for a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.
In the interim, gardaí have launched a public appeal for witnesses to come forward in a bid to establish the cause behind yesterday evening’s crash.
“Road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R187 at Inishammon, Co. Monaghan, on Wednesday 28th January 2026 between 7.15pm and 8.15pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí,” added the spokesperson.
