A YOUNG man who stole two cars from a Limerick city hotel has avoided an immediate prison sentence.

William Doran, aged 21, with a home address at Altamira Court, Thomondgate, came before Limerick Circuit Court on two counts of unlawfully taking a vehicle from the Strand Hotel, Ennis Road, on August 15, 2023.

Barrister John O’Sullivan, prosecuting, said one of the vehicles was damaged after it was stolen, while the other was unscathed.

Mr Doran, the court heard, was also observed driving on the wrong side of the road at Island View, Limerick and that he failed to stop for gardaí on August 20, 2023. He was subsequently charged with endangerment.

William Doran’s case was adjourned for six months last year to allow him to take part in a community scheme and on condition that he provide a hair follicle drug test, which came back clear.

Judge Colin Daly noted the young man “is now more compliant with authority” and he said he was pleased with his progress.
In her plea of mitigation, Barrister Yvonne Quinn said her client has completed a Safe Pass course and that he is “actively seeking work”.

Judge Daly stated he was satisfied the defendant has not reoffended or come to adverse attention since the previous court hearing.

Judge Daly proceeded to impose a three year prison sentence – which was fully suspended for three years.

Mr Doran thanked the judge before leaving the court.
