Casualty spoilers follow for Saturday’s episode (31 January), which is available to watch now on streaming service BBC iPlayer and hasn’t yet aired on TV. This article contains storyline details that some viewers may prefer to avoid.

Casualty has revealed what new resident doctor Kim Chang has been hiding in the latest episode. Kim has had a rocky start to her time in Holby on her current rotation, alongside fellow newbie Matty Linklaker.

Despite some initial nerves, she has assured her tough mentor Stevie that she is made for the ED. But viewers have noticed some worrying signs from the young doctor, including turning down after-work drinks and obsessively looking at the clock.

In today’s episode, Stevie was frustrated when Kim still needed help with cannulation. Flynn overheard Stevie talking harshly to her mentee and urged her to take a kinder approach.

As Kim treated patient Bryn, who accidentally shot himself in the foot with a nail gun, she became concerned about a relentless stream of texts from his overbearing husband Tom.

In the staff room, Kim opened up to Matty about doubting her abilities and he shared his own struggles – though he noticed that Kim was distracted by a string of notifications on her phone.

After observing Bryn and Tom again, Kim shared her safeguarding concern with Stevie, saying she thinks Bryn might be a victim of domestic abuse and that a pattern of unexplained hospital visits could be him trying to reach out.

Stevie decided to trust Kim and investigate further, and when they spoke to Bryn alone, he admitted that Tom had isolated him from his family – and that his injury was self-inflicted, to get out of the house.

With the pair promising Bryn that they would keep him safe, Stevie praised Kim for her intuition. After she later successfully cannulated a patient, Stevie took Kim out for a meal at The Anchor as a reward for her hard work.

Stevie noticed Kim’s phone pinging relentlessly again and asked her if she had her own ‘Tom’ in her life, but Kim stressed that it was instead a group chat with the other residents.

But when Kim excused herself and headed to the bathroom, she was seen making herself sick – so she could remove the burger and chips she had eaten from her dangerous calorie tracking app.

Will Kim be able to open up about her eating disorder, or will any of her colleagues notice that she is struggling?

Casualty airs on Saturday nights on BBC One and now streams first on BBC iPlayer, where episodes are released at 6am on the day of transmission.
