Like many period homes in south county Dublin, Amy Swan’s house boasts an impressive collection of artworks. However, among the paintings there are also prints and drawings of a very British institution – Battersea Power Station. Amy and her husband David Twohig are both Irish so, on the face of it, the power station might seem a bit random. Nonetheless, it’s an integral part of their story.
Built in the 1920s, Battersea Power Station at its operational peak supplied London with one fifth of its electricity before becoming derelict in the mid 1970s. Then in the noughties, it enjoyed a huge regeneration and renovation and is now alive with apartments, shops, cinemas and galleries with a full programme of events, and in the process it’s become a significant landmark in the British capital.
