Drivers in Mayo, and the West of Ireland were detected for notable breaking of the speed limit on roads over the St. Brigid’s Bank Holiday, according to Gardaí.

An Garda Síochána carried out an enhanced Road Safety and Traffic Enforcement campaign over the bank holiday, from Thursday January 29th until Tuesday February 3rd.

Over this period, two people died on Irish roads, bringing the total for this year to 13 so far.

From Friday until Monday, Gardaí and mobile/fixed GoSafe cameras detected nearly 3,500 motorists speeding. The highest volume of speeding was detected on Monday, with 800 cases noted.

In Mayo, one driver was spotted doing 113kph in an 80kph zone on the N59 in Westport. In Sligo, a motorist was detected doing 154kph in an 80kph zone on the N16.

Nationally, nearly 200 drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant, with nearly 400 drivers detected for driving while using a mobile phone.

Over 660 vehicles were detained by members of An Garda Síochána, 50% for no insurance.
