In our industry, it is often said that films don’t fail, budgets do. But there are times when films fail due to incorrect release timing. Bejoy Nambiar’s 2024 flick Dange comes under that category. The filmmaker is known for his sharp storytelling and technical finesse, and both were present in ample doses in the film. The climax seemed like it was shot in one take and became something to watch out for. Sadly, it arrived in cinemas in a very crowded period. It clashed with Laapataa Ladies; also, it was released a week after Article 370 and a week before Shaitaan. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Bejoy Nambiar opened up on this aspect.

EXCLUSIVE: Bejoy Nambiar opens up on almost casting Harshvardhan Rane, Vicky Kaushal in Agni Natchathiram remake: “I was heartbroken when it got shelved”; admits that Dange would have been a success in the post-Deewaniyat era: “Its shows were discontinued in 3 days”

Bejoy said, “In hindsight, there can be multiple things you can look at. For a film like Dange, since it was not a star-heavy film, it relied on word of mouth to pull in the audience. Because of all the films that you mentioned, its shows were drastically reduced in just three days. Earlier, films used to run for a week at least. But we didn’t have that advantage. We didn’t get the required support from distributors and producers. I wish the producers had a little bit of faith and pushed the film a bit more. That would have helped us find more audience, in my opinion.”

Dange starred Harshvardhan Rane, who has been consistently delivering fine performances. But his star power got a boost due to the re-release of his 2016 love saga Sanam Teri Kasam in February 2025. Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat (2025) also became a hit, proving that he’s one of the bankable actors now. Hence, it is often believed that Dange, in the post-Deewaniyat era, would have been a success. Bejoy Nambiar laughed and agreed, “For sure. It would have been a different and better run.”

Dange was Bejoy Nambiar’s second film with Harshvardhan Rane after Taish (2020). It would have been his third film had Bejoy’s dream project taken off. 10 years ago, Bejoy desired to make the remake of Mani Ratnam’s Agni Natchathiram (1988) and cast Harshvardhan Rane and Vicky Kaushal. Considering that both actors are crowd pullers at present, would Bejoy Nambiar like to revisit the remake?

Bejoy Nambiar said, “That’s one film of Mani sir that I absolutely love. I was close to making it at that point, but at the last moment, the plan didn’t materialize. It broke my heart at that time. I am not sure if that’s a script I would want to revisit.”

He continued, “Also, I just did Dange, which was a two-hero film. Doing a two-hero project is not an easy task in our industry. Hence, I’ll probably not do that right now.”
