It’s claimed Clare has lost one of its finest human beings following the passing of the legendary hurling selector, physio and boxing coach Colum Flynn.

Colum played an integral role in Clare’s hurling success in the 70s and 90s, whilst also giving over six decades of service to the promotion of boxing in the county.

Tributes have been pouring in for the late Colum Flynn, who passed away peacefully on Friday, following a short illness .

A native of the county town, Flynn was a founding member of Ennis Boxing Club in 1961 and was credited with putting a countless number of champions through the ring over the next 67 years.

A gifted physio and hurling guru, Flynn was also a selector on Cyril Farrell’s All-Ireland winning Hurling backroom teams of the 1980’s, Ger Loughnane’s All-Ireland winning sides of 95 and 97, along with Fr Harry Bohan’s National Hurling League Champions of 77 and 78.

Fr Harry says the county has lost a huge friend and human being.

Off the pitch and outside of the ring, Colum Flynn is being remembered for his caring nature, empowering young people and instilling the right values and self respect in every player and budding boxer he met on his way.

Tommy Lyons of Ennis Boxing Club says Colum was a friend to everyone who knew him.

Colum Flynn is survived by his wife Kay, son Padraig, daughters Ciara, Sorcha, Aoife, Katie & Eilish, and wide circle of extended family and friends.

May he rest in peace.
