From Monday, September 1, children under 18 travelling on public transport within the Dublin Commuter Leap Fare Zone will be eligible for a 67pc discount compared with adult fares.

The move brings outer suburban areas into line with the discounts already available within the Dublin City Zone.

The change follows a series of fare adjustments earlier this year, which redrew boundaries to create four new Leap fare zones across Dublin and its surrounding commuter belt.

The NTA says the new structure is designed to make travel more affordable for families and encourage greater use of public transport.

The discount applies to daily, weekly and monthly Child Leap products and can be purchased via the Leap top-up app or at leapcard.ie.

Among the towns set to benefit are Balbriggan, Skerries, Greystones, Kilcoole, Kilcock and Sallins/Naas, all within Zone 2 of the new commuter structure.

At present, children using a weekly Leap product for journeys to Dublin city centre pay €16. From Monday, the cost will fall to €10.60 — a saving of €5.40, or 33pc.

The revised fares will also allow children travelling in from Zones 2, 3 and 4 to continue their journey within the city centre at no extra charge, whether by train, Luas or Dublin Bus services.

Jeremy Ryan, Director of Public Transport Services at the NTA, said the move was introduced following feedback from families across commuter towns.

“We’ve heard from families and communities across the new commuter zones, and we’ve listened,” he said. “By aligning child fare discounts across Zones 2, 3 and 4 with those in Dublin City, we’re making public transport more affordable and accessible for young people, wherever they live. It’s a meaningful step toward a more inclusive and connected transport network.”

Interim discounts will also apply to weekly products as part of the NTA’s broader fare strategy.

Further details on the revised child products are available at leapcard.ie or through the Leap top-up app.
