Residents of a Letterkenny housing estate have called for discussions after parking congestion caused by supporters attending the Donegal v Mayo match at O’Donnell Park.

Parking at O’ Donnell Park was limited to those attending with relevant passes and Gardaí had appealed to the thousands of matchgoers to park legally and safely.

However, despite Garda cones being placed along the R250 Ballymacool Road and patrols carried out, residents of Ballymacool reported that cars lined the roads and access points throughout the estate.

Visitors also caused damage to green areas within the estate, with some vehicles parked on grass verges.

The Ballymacool Residents Association said: “We have to commend the Gardai and St Eunan’s GAA club for all their assistance. They have tried their best and were out early this morning with cones along the road. Despite this, some people think it’s acceptable to block footpaths, driveways and destroy our green areas.”

The association said they had hoped Gardaí on site and a barrier placed across the estate entrance would have prevented the disruption.

Instead, residents said the reality was cars lining both sides of the road.

“What do we have to do to prevent this from happening again? Discussions need to take place between all parties involved with residents taking priority. This can not and will not be tolerated again on any level. Ballymacool Estate is not a car park.”

Residents also raised serious concerns regarding access in the event of an emergency.

A spokesperson said: “What happens in an emergency situation? An ambulance or a fire brigade would not be able to get in or out of Ballymacool. This has gone on too long.”

Residents have now called for urgent discussions so there won’t be a repeat of the problems at future fixtures at O’Donnell Park.
