Meghan Trainor‘s son Riley is all grown up!
The 4-year-old is heading off to school this year, but his mama isn’t exactly ready for it.
“He’s about to start his first year, and I will be obliterated,” Trainor, 31, tells PEOPLE exclusively at an event in New York City for State Farm.
Riley, whom Trainor shares with her husband, Daryl Sabara, also recently got to go to camp for the first time, and that was hard enough on the Grammy-winning mom.
“I brought him to camp for the first time ever and wanted to just evaporate,” she says with a laugh. “I hated every moment of it. I cried, and not like a sad … I was like, ‘I hate this,’ so school’s going to be tough for me, but he loves it.”

In fact, the “Whoops” singer jokes that she might just be that mom who has all kinds of things going on at home that Riley needs to be a part of, simply because she wants him with her. When 2-year-old Barry is old enough, it might be the same — or it might be different!
“I’m going to take [Riley] out [of school] as much as I can,” she says while laughing. “I’m going to call the school and be like, ‘I’m so sorry, we have another family event.’ I hope they’re cool with that.”
Trainor admits that part of the root of her fear of Riley starting school is her own anxiety about her school days. As a child in New England, she says there were times when she experienced “bad school anxiety” and she’s now doing her best not to project that onto her kids because she wants them to be excited about school.
“It’s not fair to do,” she says of how she sometimes places that feeling of anxiousness on Riley. “I’m like, ‘They’re going to hate it,’ And [someone] is like, ‘What if they don’t? What if it’s just a you thing?’ He’s excited. He has a cute uniform and everything.”
Despite how excited Riley is, Trainor says she’s still “going to be a mess” and promises that she will film every second of his first day.
“It’s going to be so bad. If camp was that bad … it’s going to be great,” she jokes.

Trainor, who recently linked up with State Farm for a new Trainor vs. Trainer football campaign, also starring Patrick Mahomes and Jake from State Farm, celebrated Riley’s 4th birthday back in February with a Trolls-themed bash. At his party, the family also had a ball pit and a pretend car wash.
She tells PEOPLE that her older son’s interests vary these days, but right now he’s into gymnastics after a stint in soccer. The singer reveals it’s been great in helping with his coordination.
“Now he — I’m so proud — is the kid they choose at the beginning of the class to show them, this is what we’re going to do today,” she says. “I was like, ‘Is he in the Olympics?’ He is so cute and so good now. So he’s just incredible. He’s my gymnastics boy.”
