The American man who was previously arrested for questioning in relation to the murder of Kerry farmer, Mike Gaine has been re-arrested this morning.

Michael Kelley (53) is currently being detained in a Garda Station in Kerry and can be questioned for 24 hours.

It is understood a warrant was obtained to arrest and question Mr Kelley in relation to the murder of Mr Gaine yesterday, and he was arrested at around 7.30am this morning.

Mr Kelley was previously arrested on May 18 over the murder of 56-year-old Mr Gaine. He was questioned for 24 hours before being released without charge.

He identified himself as the man who was questioned but has denied any knowledge of the murder of the Kerry farmer.

Mr Kelley, who is from Maine in the US, lived on Mr Gaine’s farm, in the old farm house.

Mr Gaine (56) disappeared from his farm on March 20 and was reported missing the following day.

Almost two months later, his body parts were later identified in a slurry tank on his farm, 6km outside Kenmare.

Gardaí believe he was murdered in the cattle shed, and his body was dismembered and dumped in the tank.

They said a man has been arrested in connection with the investigation this morning, Tuesday, February 24, 2026.

He is currently detained for questioning under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

The investigation led by Serious Crime Unit Kerry Division has been and continues to be supported by the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (GNBCI).

An Garda Síochána through family liaison officers continue to liaise with and support the family of Micheal Gaine.
