Swapping sightseeing for checking out local grocery stores and markets when you’re on holidays is one of this year’s top travel trends. Some well-know chefs and foodies tell us about their favourite places to do it…

Supermarket safari
One of my first trips outside Ireland was to London as a teenager, and Harrods Food Hall was top of my list. I still remember roaming those decadent aisles, poring over displays of exotic fruit and luxury food, then spending most of my holiday money on glistening, intricate tarts in the bakery.
Greece was my next holiday. I kept a diary that summer, and rereading it now, I’m amazed how much is dedicated to the supermarket finds I lived on – tubs of Fage yoghurt with honey, Ruffles Barbecue Chips and fresh chocolate milk.
