Double child murderer Ian Huntley spoke openly of his fears of being fatally attacked in prison and even told relatives he hoped it would be quick and painless.

The notorious killer, responsible for the deaths of 10-year-olds Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells in Soham in 2002, is serving out his 40 year prison sentence at HMP Frankland in County Durham. He was reportedly attacked with a 3ft-long iron bar at a recycling workshop inside the jail.

Now a prison source has revealed Huntley’s chilling prophesy saying he knew “they’ll get me sooner or later”. The prime suspect in the attack has been named as triple killer Anthony Russell, although police and prison authorities have not confirmed his identity.

A source, quoted in The Sun said: “Huntley knew he was hated and that five or six inmates wanted him dead, some openly said that if they were left alone with him, they would kill him. There had been intelligence reports about an attack. And inmates had told him outright that he was going to get ‘done’. So Huntley knew it was coming and had told relatives and the few friends he has about his fears. He even said that if he was killed, he wanted it to be as quick and painless as possible.”

“Huntley has been in prison long enough to know that any attack on him would be a severe one, and possibly fatal. This isn’t something that has just been brewing for weeks — it has been going on longer than that.

“Huntley was reluctant to report his fears, but had relied on prison officers to keep him safe. He was worried before the attack that the protection he had been receiving had been diminished recently, there will be questions asked about what officers were doing when this happened.”

Huntley had recently begun working in a prison workshop and using the gym – changes that brought him into closer contact with prisoners who might wish to target him.

Speaking with the Chronicle, the anonymous source alleges Huntley was being held on an ‘enhanced’ wing at HMP Frankland, where inmates are kept separate from the general prison population.

“He is sort of protected in prison, but so are the likes of Levi Belfield and Wayne Couzens,” the insider explained. “They all get moved around together. You could never put him in normal prison population.”

On Friday evening, Huntley was reportedly given a 5% chance of survival after his head was ‘split in two’ during the assault.

Today a Durham Constabulary spokesperson said: “The 52-year-old man remains in hospital in a serious condition, there have been no changes overnight.”
