Google Docs has expanded the capabilities of its built-in AI assistant Gemini, allowing it to help users draft, edit and refine documents automatically as part of a new upgrade to the platform.
The update enables Gemini to assist users in writing documents by pulling reference information from other services within the Google Workspace ecosystem. This includes data from Google Drive and Gmail, allowing the AI to analyse relevant content and generate a draft more efficiently.
If users are unsure about the quality of their writing, Gemini can also help polish the language and improve the clarity of the document. The AI is able to refine wording, strengthen the structure of the content and adjust the format to better match the style requested by the user.
In addition to drafting and editing support, Google has introduced a new feature called Match writing style. The tool analyses the tone and writing patterns used by different contributors and adjusts the document so that the overall style remains consistent.
The feature is designed to make collaborative work easier, particularly for teams that need to produce documents with a unified tone and structure despite being written by multiple authors.
Google said the new AI capabilities are being gradually rolled out to users subscribed to the Google AI Pro and AI Ultra packages.
At the initial stage, the features are available only in English, while support for additional languages is expected to be added in future updates.
