For the more than 4,000 Irish teachers living and working in the United Arab Emirates, the past fortnight has been an anxious time.
Since the US and Israel launched their attacks on Iran on February 28, sparking a wave of tit-for-tat missile and drone strikes across the region, the expat community has found itself facing uncomfortable realities in a desert state once seen as a glamorous, safe place for foreigners seeking a high-end holiday or to earn tax-free money.
