Overnight restrictions are being put in place for the Brosna Water Treatment Plant.

Uisce Éireann says the restrictions are as a result of increased summer demand on the current supply and they are being put in place to maintain daytime supply.

The restrictions will run from 9 o’clock tonight until 7am on Friday.

Uisce Éireann says water will be restricted overnight to ensure normal service for industries, residences and commercial premises are in place during business hours.

The catchment regions where restrictions will be in place include the townlands of Shanabally, Shanafona, Gortroe, Kilmanihan, Feale Bridge and surrounding areas.

Uisce Éireann’s Charlie O’Leary says these restrictions are essential to safeguard continuous daytime supply and to allow the reservoir the breathing space to replenish.

Mr O’Leary says Uisce Éireann is consistently monitoring the supply and they do understand the inconvenience the restrictions may cause.

However, he adds when there is a good spell of weather it leads to a high demand.

Uisce Éireann says there may be discoloration to the water supply each morning due to these restrictions. They say if water is discoloured, run the cold kitchen tap for up to 20 minutes and this will usually restore the water to a clear colour; the water is safe to drink once running clear.

Uisce Éireann is also asking customers in the area to conserve water, where possible.
