A large crowd of locals gathered yesterday evening in Carndonagh to remember Derry woman Amy Doherty.

The 28-year-old mother-of-two was killed at a residence in the Summer Meadows Mews area of the city last Saturday.

30-year-old Connor McNamee appeared in court yesterday charged with her murder.

Alongside a large vigil held in Derry in memory of the young woman last night, the domestic abuse support charity Lifeline Inishowen also held a candlelight vigil in Carndonagh to remember Amy.

As part of the vigil, 30 balloons were also released to mark the 30 women who have been violently killed in the North since 2020.

Lifeline Inishowen thanked everyone who attended for showing solidarity with Amy and her family last night.

“Thank you to everyone who braved the cold and the hailstones tonight to show our solidarity with Amy and her family. The photos do not do the crowd justice,” they said.

“Thank you to Eleanor, our wonderful Chairperson, for speaking on numerous occasions this week. To Councillor Joy Beard, for her support and touching words tonight. To everyone who took the opportunity to use their voice. To Roisin McGrory for the beautiful music. And to the Party Shop in Carndonagh, for their generosity with the balloons.”

“Tonight was a sad event. Many hearts are broken at this tragic death. But thank you all for attending, we are overwhelmed at the many people who joined us. Your presence was appreciated more than we can ever say.”

“May Amy Rest in Peace.”
