A vocal move by Maria Walsh MEP to break ranks with Fine Gael and the European People’s Party over plans for migrant return hubs has put the Midlands–North-West MEP at odds with an emerging parliamentary consensus in Brussels.

MEPs endorsed proposals to open the door to offshore detention in non-EU countries by 389 votes to 206 yesterday, in a landmark alignment between the dominant EPP group and elements of the populist right much to the dismay of left-wing parties.
