Inis Oírr.
Uisce Éireann lifted night-time water restrictions on Inis Oírr, in County Galway, over four months after they were first introduced.
Water restrictions were in effect on Inis Oírr – the smallest of the three Aran Islands – nightly between 11pm and 7am throughout the summer months in order to conserve low water resources.
The Aran Island was hit with official drought status in mid-April, due to low rainfall levels over the winter months.
Uisce Éireann said the restrictions were necessary to ensure a continuous daily water supply was available for residents, businesses and visitors to the island.
The Irish water body issued several reminders to customers about the restrictions on the island’s water supply in the ensuing months.
However, this September the restrictions have been lifted as water reserves have sufficiently recovered, marking the end of drought status on Inis Oírr.
Uisce Éireann’s Tony Kelly thanked customers on Inis Oírr for their co-operation and acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the restrictions.
“Water reserves on the island have recovered and are currently sufficient to ensure a continuous water supply going into the autumn. Uisce Éireann will continue to monitor and maintain the supply for our customers on Inis Oírr,” he said.
“We acknowledge the inconvenience that can be caused by nigh-time restrictions, and we would like to thank residents, businesses and visitors to the island for their conservation efforts during the period of the restrictions.”
