Motorists are at risk of being slapped with a £300 fine for making a major error when loading their vehicles. Patric Riley, UK Operations Director at commercial vehicle firm Northgate Vehicle Hire, warned that some motorists were exceeding crucial vehicle weight restrictions.
Patric warned drivers were at risk of staggering fees, with the DVSA implementing a graduated fine system depending on how far drivers are over the limit. Vans 5-9.99% over the limit results in a £100 fine, with drivers 10-14.99% over getting hit with a £200 charge and those 15% or more paying a £300 fine.
Northgate has warned that in certain cases, vans can be issued an immediate prohibition notice, meaning road users cannot get behind the wheel of their vans with immediate effect. Drivers were issued fines totalling a whopping £391,964.90 for overloading light goods vehicles between 2024 and 2025 – £71,000 more than in the previous year.
Patric said: “An issue that many drivers and businesses overlook is the danger of overloading vans. Although it may seem like a simple way to save time and reduce the number of trips, carrying more weight than a van is designed to handle can result in serious consequences. As a result, drivers who exceed legal weight limits can face substantial fines, penalty points and in some cases, legal action.”
Each vehicle must follow its Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM), which is usually seen on the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) plate found on the inside of the car. Strict rules are in place for overloaded cars or vans due to the possible safety risks associated with a heavy vehicle.
Patric added: “An overloaded van causes serious safety, mechanical and legal problems, including reduced braking performance, poor vehicle handling, increased accident severity and legal and financial consequences, to name just a few of the unfortunate events that can occur.”
