A convicted rapist, who was extradited from Scotland at the beginning of April, has been charged with a number of offences for alleged breaches of the Sex Offenders Act.

The 52-year-old male, who cannot be identified as reporting restrictions have been placed on the case, appeared before Dundalk District Court last week and is due before the court again next week.

He has been accused of contravening the provisions of a Sex Offenders’ Order when he allegedly travelled to Scotland last year.

An Garda Siochana confirmed the male was extradited from Scotland on foot of a Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TAC) on April 1.

He subsequently appeared before a special sitting of Dundalk District Court on Thursday, April 2.

He is charged with three offences under the Sex Offenders Act 2001.

The first charge is that on a date unknown between the 25/07/2025 and 27/10/2025, both dates inclusive within the jurisdiction of the State, being a person to whom Part 2 of the Sex Offenders Act 2001 applied, failed to notify, and failed to continue to notify on every third day thereafter, the Garda Siochana of the specific location of the place in the State where he intended to reside or stay at on the night of that notification pursuant to a requirement under Section 10(2) and (6) of the Sex Offenders Act 2001.

That offence is contrary to Section 12(1)(a) (as amended by Section 10 of the Sex Offenders (Amendment Act 2023) and Section 12(3) (as amended by Section 13 of the Criminal Law (Human Trafficking Act 2008) of the Sex Offenders Act 2001.

The second charge is that on a date unknown between 15/07/2025 and 17/07/2025, both dates inclusive did contravene the provisions of a sex offender order made in respect of him on 14/12/2022, at a named Circuit Criminal Court in that he did change address without notifying a member of An Garda Siochana, in person, at a Garda Station 24 hours prior to this change of address, with the new address which he intended to reside either permanently or on a temporary basis by travelling on the Stena Line Ferry from Belfast Port to Cairnryan in Scotland on the 17/07/2025.

That offence is contrary to Section 22 of the Sex Offenders Act 2001

The third charge is that on a date unknown between 25/07/2025 and 27/10/2025, both dates inclusive, did contravene the provisions of a sex offender order made in respect of him on 14/12/2022 at a named Circuit Criminal Court in that he did change address without notifying a member of An Garda Siochana, in person, at a Garda Station 24 hours prior to this change of address, with the new address which he intended to reside either permanently or on a temporary basis by travelling to Ayrshire in Scotland on an unknown date between the 25/07/2025 and 27/10/2025.

That offence is contrary to Section 22 of the Sex Offenders Act 2001.

Judge Nicola Andrews remanded the accused in custody to be produced in person on April 22.

In a statement issued to this paper, An Garda Siochana confirmed “Gardaí in the Louth Cavan Monaghan Division arrested a male (aged in his 50s) following his extradition from Scotland on foot of a Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) warrant on April 1.

“He appeared before a special sitting of Dundalk District Court on April 2 and was remanded in custody to appear again on April 22.

“As this matter is now before the Courts, An Garda Síochána has no further comment,” the statement said.
