WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. (WMTV) – A nearly 70-foot-tall steel dragon sculpture arrived at the Dellshire Resort in the Wisconsin Dells Tuesday morning, delivered all the way from Las Vegas just days before the resort’s grand opening.
The dragon, named Golspar, is one of the largest steel dragon sculptures in the world. Resort officials say it’s designed to serve as a guardian-like mascot at the entrance and a centerpiece that helps tie the property’s fantasy storyline together.
With a 55-foot wingspan and weighing close to 17,000 pounds, the steel dragon was designed by Las Vegas metal sculptor Kevin Stone. Stone said the preparation and construction took about 20 months to complete before the sculpture made its cross-country trip to Wisconsin.
Dellshire Resort General Manager Michael Lucero said the dragon was part of the owners’ original vision for the property and is meant to be a signature landmark for visitors.
“It’s going to welcome all the visitors to the Wisconsin Dells to the Dellshire Resort and get them very excited about coming into our realm to see all the wonderful things we have to offer,” said Lucero.
Once installation is complete, Golspar will feature red, light-up eyes and eventually be able to breathe fire.
The medieval-themed resort is scheduled to open May 10.
