Patrick Kielty brought the curtain down on last night’s Late Late Show amid mounting speculation over whether his contract will be extended for the programme’s 65th series.
The episode marked the season finale, with the show heading into its summer hiatus before returning in the autumn. Patrick addressed the audience at the close of the programme, saying: “That is it from us for tonight, and for this season, we hope you have a fab summer. This has been the Late Late Show, I’ve been Patrick Kielty, and playing us out tonight, this is Westlife! Goodnight.”
RTÉ have yet to confirm whether the presenter will be offered a fresh contract. The Co. Down comedian originally signed a three-year deal with RTÉ, commencing in 2023, which officially concluded following last night’s season finale.
RTÉ director-general Kevin Bakhurst has previously indicated his desire for Patrick to remain at the helm, stating: “I’ve made it really clear to Patrick that we all think he’s doing a great job and we would like to continue that.”, reports RSVP Live.
In an official statement, RTÉ said: “RTÉ does not comment on individual contracts … We look forward to the programme returning for its 65th year in the autumn.”
Patrick was unveiled as the fourth permanent host of the long-running chat show in May 2023, just one week before his predecessor Ryan Tubridy fronted his farewell episode. Both men join Gay Byrne and Pat Kenny as the only permanent hosts in the show’s distinguished history. The season finale tonight boasted an impressive line-up. Westlife joined Patrick for a nostalgic journey through their career. The trio discussed their upcoming 3Arena residency this September, recounted amusing fan-encounter anecdotes and embraced the nostalgia. A devoted Westlife superfan also competed against the band members in a quiz to determine who truly knows them best.
Boy George appeared alongside Patrick to discuss an exhibition showcasing some of his most iconic outfits, arriving at the Museum of Style Icons at Newbridge Silverware this May.
Irish comedian Garron Noone featured in the evening’s entertainment, delivering his signature humour and charm to proceedings.
Brothers Jordan and Cian Adams recounted their remarkable story of completing the London Marathon with a fridge strapped to Jordan’s back, explaining their passionate commitment to raising dementia awareness following the loss of twelve family members, including their mother, Geraldine, to the condition.
