Nintendo Switch finally gets the Halo port we’ve always dreamed of, but it might not quite be the port you’d think it is.
The Halo series is one of the most popular first-party brands on Xbox, ever since its inception in November 2001 as a launch title for Microsoft’s original console with Halo: Combat Evolved.
Since that time, Halo has seen tons of sequels (for better or worse), spin-offs, as well as an ill-fated live-action TV series and more. However, speaking of Halo: Combat Evolved and being one of Xbox’s most popular first-party brands, not only is this beloved game getting a remake, but it’s also coming to PlayStation 5.
Is the Halo: Combat Evolved Remake Coming to Other Platforms?
At the time of writing, the remake, Halo: Campaign Evolved, is coming to PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S at some point this year. There is no word whether it’s releasing on Nintendo Switch 2, at least not yet.
However, while it’s not the official remake, or even a remake at all, a devoted fan has managed to make Halo: Combat Evolved playable on the base Nintendo Switch.
“Got Halo: Combat Evolved running on the Nintendo Switch without cloud streaming too!” tweeted Generalkidd.
How is Halo: Combat Evolved playable on Nintendo Switch?
As you probably guessed, Halo: Combat Evolved is playable on the Nintendo Switch via emulation, Generalkidd explains. More specifically, it’s the original Xbox version (not PC) and is using “an ARM64 build of Xemu.”
“TEACH ME YOUR WAYS, HEED, I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO ADD THIS TO MY MODDED SWITCH!” pleaded Im_JustKad.
That being said, in the comments, Generalkidd suggested that the performance of this emulation isn’t that great at this time, but they will be sharing a tutorial video on how to make Halo: Combat Evolved playable on the hybrid console. So, if that sounds like something you want to know (albeit emulation being somewhat of a legal grey area), it might be worth following Generalkidd on X.
We Previewed Halo: Campaign Evolved!
“Halo: Campaign Evolved feels like a golden opportunity for Halo Studios to start fresh and give us its own take on the Halo series, and I hope it seizes that opportunity with the full game,” said GAMINGbible’s Sam in his preview.
While we wait for Halo: Campaign Evolved, we can at least play pretty much all the mainline games in the series courtesy of Halo: The Master Chief Collection on PC and modern Xbox consoles. It’s also included with all tiers of Xbox Game Pass.
