Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street star Claire Sweeney has revealed that she suffered a minor accident that left her face “smashed”. The actor also admitted she was “gutted” after her fall broke her designer glasses.

Known for playing Cassie Plummer on the ITV soap, Claire took to her Instagram Stories yesterday to open up about the incident that also left her struggling at work.

“I’ve just finished work and I’ve been trying to negotiate my day – glasses with just one arm,” she told followers. “They’re my good Tom Ford glasses and I fell down the stairs, and smashed my face. I’m lucky I’ve only got a tiny mark. I’ve broken my glasses! I’m totally gutted.

“I’m just wondering… apparently they can’t be fixed, apparently,” the star conceded, before quipping that she could be like Corrie character Jack Duckworth and stick the leg on the glasses with tape.

“I don’t know. Maybe I should do a Jack Duckworth and get a bit of sellotape on them, what do you reckon? Annoying,” she said.

It was confirmed earlier this year that Claire is due to exit the soap as Cassie after landing a role in a touring production of Annie.

“We wish Claire every success playing Miss Hannigan and congratulate her on being offered a role she has long wanted to play,” a show spokesperson said at the time.

“Cassie will be on the cobbles until the summer during which time she will continue to make her presence felt in Weatherfield leading up to a great exit storyline.”

While her exact departure storyline under wraps at the moment, the latest development that will play into it is the arrival of Tyrone Dobbs’ father to Weatherfield.

“Tyrone’s dad makes an appearance in the show,” producer Kate Brooks teased to Digital Spy. “Needless to say, he comes with quite a bit of drama. It’s going to cause quite a lot of friction within that family, obviously with Cassie’s history.

“As you know, Cassie’s leaving us and so it will contribute to her exit, which is going to be massive and quite explosive. It’ll be full of all the twists and turns that you can come to expect from an exit story.”

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
